New Balance’s own size charts cover men’s 2.5–20, women’s 3–16, toddler 0–10, little kid 10.5–3, big kid 3.5–7.

New Balance runs large in men’s shoes, against 23 other brands’ charts: size for size, its chart is made for a longer foot than another brand’s 56% of the time, about the same (within 2.5 mm) 33% and a shorter one 11%, typically by half a size. Go about half a size down from the size you wear in most brands, or size from your foot length on its chart.

Women’s sizes in men’s New Balance

New Balance’s charts print the women’s size beside each men’s size, 10.5 beside 9 for example, 1.5 sizes apart. But New Balance’s women’s chart makes every women’s size for a foot 5 mm longer than the men’s size printed beside it: a women’s 10.5 is for a foot up to 27.5 cm, the men’s 9 up to 27.0 cm.

That is about half a size. If your foot fills your women’s size, a men’s pair converted by the printed column is made for a slightly shorter foot: choose the men’s size from your foot length on its men’s chart instead.

Does New Balance run big or small?

From New Balance’s own foot lengths: first against the other brands’ charts, size for size (whether a US size is made for a longer or shorter foot than theirs), then against the standard size tables, foot by foot. Brands measure differently (Nike’s chart, for one, prints a box size in centimetres beside the foot length and says the two differ), so this is what each chart advises, not a fit test.

Men’s

Against the standard size tables, New Balance’s chart gives a US size half a size to 1½ sizes smaller for 13 of 13 foot lengths from 24.0 to 30.0 cm: its sizes allow a longer foot than the standard ones.

For example, New Balance’s men’s US 9 is for a foot up to 27.0 cm (the standard US 9: 26.25 cm). The other 23 brands’ charts make it for a foot from 26.0 to 27.7 cm: 11 for a shorter foot than New Balance’s, 10 for about the same (within 1 mm) and 2 for a longer one.

Charts that size like New Balance’s: Saucony, Timberland, Vans, UGG, Dr. Martens, Fila, Crocs and Under Armour. Charts that size like the standard tables: Nike, adidas, HEYDUDE, KEEN, SOREL, HOKA, ANTA, Clarks and Reebok.

Women’s

New Balance runs large in women’s shoes, against 21 other brands’ charts: size for size, its chart is made for a longer foot than another brand’s 58% of the time, about the same (within 2.5 mm) 37% and a shorter one 6%, typically by half a size. Go about half a size down from the size you wear in most brands, or size from your foot length on its chart.

Against the standard size tables, New Balance’s chart gives a US size half a size to 1½ sizes smaller for 12 of 12 foot lengths from 22.0 to 27.5 cm: its sizes allow a longer foot than the standard ones.

For example, New Balance’s women’s US 8 is for a foot up to 25.0 cm (the standard US 8: 24.1 cm). The other 21 brands’ charts make it for a foot from 24.0 to 25.3 cm: 17 for a shorter foot than New Balance’s, 3 for about the same (within 1 mm) and 1 for a longer one.
