Big kid size chart
Each size fits feet longer than the size before it, up to its own length. Between two sizes, take the bigger one.
| US | Foot length up to | UK | EU |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5Y | 21.6 cm · 8.50 in | 2.5 | 34–34.5 |
| 4Y | 22.0 cm · 8.67 in | 3 | 34.5–35.5 |
| 4.5Y | 22.4 cm · 8.83 in | 3.5 | 35.5–36 |
| 5Y | 22.9 cm · 9.00 in | 4 | 36–36.5 |
| 5.5Y | 23.3 cm · 9.17 in | 4.5 | 36.5–37 |
| 6Y | 23.7 cm · 9.33 in | 5 | 37–38 |
| 6.5Y | 24.1 cm · 9.50 in | 5.5 | 38–38.5 |
| 7Y | 24.55 cm · 9.67 in | 6 | 38.5–39 |
UK and EU sizes step differently, so a US size can cover two of them (“7–7.5”). After 7Y, adult sizes take over.
Big kid sizes in women’s and men’s
Big kid (Y) sizes use men’s numbers: on the standard size tables a 7Y fits the same foot as a men’s 7, and women’s sizes are 1½ higher, so it’s a women’s 8.5. What Y, GS and the other letters mean.
| Big kid | Women’s | Men’s | Foot up to |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5Y | 5 | 3.5 | 21.6 cm |
| 4Y | 5.5 | 4 | 22.0 cm |
| 4.5Y | 6 | 4.5 | 22.4 cm |
| 5Y | 6.5 | 5 | 22.9 cm |
| 5.5Y | 7 | 5.5 | 23.3 cm |
| 6Y | 7.5 | 6 | 23.7 cm |
| 6.5Y | 8 | 6.5 | 24.1 cm |
| 7Y | 8.5 | 7 | 24.55 cm |
On the brands’ own charts
7 of 17 brands follow the 1½ step from big kid to women’s. The rest don’t: a 7Y is a women’s 8 on adidas’s charts and 9 on HOKA’s. Check the brand you’re buying.

From each brand’s kids’ and adult charts, 3.5Y to 7Y: the adult sizes the kids’ chart prints beside each size where it does (Nike, Jordan, New Balance, Saucony), otherwise the adult row with the same EU or UK size, otherwise the nearest foot length (within 3 mm). Men’s steps are shown where a brand’s men’s chart reaches these sizes and the number differs. Campus, Fila and Liberty are left out: their women’s charts print a US size one above UK, not the US women’s scale. Each size, brand by brand: 3.5Y, 4Y, 4.5Y, 5Y, 5.5Y, 6Y, 6.5Y, 7Y. Ages
The typical child’s foot is in big kid sizes from 10 to 14 years. Each child is different: at every age, feet differ by several sizes.

Brands’ own charts
These brands publish a big kid chart. Each labels sizes its own way (some add C, K or T; some print only the number), and brands draw their bands differently: some start or end several sizes away from the sizes above. Check the brand’s chart with your child’s foot length.
How long a size lasts
A typical foot grows about 7 mm a year from 10 to 14. A half size is 4.2 mm, so a half size lasts about 7 months from 10 to 14 for the median child; yours may grow faster or slower. How much room a shoe needs, and how often to measure.

Measure with a photo: they stand on a sheet of paper against a wall while you hold their heel. Or print the foot ruler. Then type the length:
Questions
What are big kid sizes?
US 3.5Y to 7Y, for feet up to 24.55 cm (9.67 in). In UK sizes that’s 2.5–6, in EU sizes 34–39.
What comes after 7Y?
Adult sizes. 7Y fits a foot up to 24.55 cm, the same length as a US men’s 7 (women’s 8.5).
What is a 7Y in women’s?
A women’s 8.5 on the standard tables, which put women’s sizes 1½ above big kid and men’s numbers. Brands differ: adidas’s charts make it a women’s 8 and HOKA’s 9.
Is a big kid size the same as a men’s size?
On the standard tables, yes: Y sizes use men’s numbers, so 7Y is a men’s 7. ANTA (men’s 0 to +½), Golden Goose (men’s 0 to +½), HOKA (men’s +½ to +1), KEEN (men’s 0 to +1), Saucony (men’s +1) map it differently on their own charts.
What does the letter after a kids’ size mean?
US children’s sizes are labelled C (or K) up to 13.5C, then Y (youth) from 1Y. The numbers start again at 1 when Y begins, so 1Y is bigger than 13.5C.
