Ski boot
size

Ski boots don’t use shoe sizes. They use Mondopoint: your foot length in centimetres. Measure carefully and you already know your size.

The short answer

Your ski boot size (Mondopoint) is your foot length in centimetres, in half-centimetre steps: a 26.2 cm foot is Mondo 26.5. Measure standing, in thin ski socks, and use your longer foot.

Find your ski boot size

Type your foot length. You get your Mondopoint, the street sizes for the same foot, and the size on each brand’s own ski boot chart.

Standing, in the socks you’ll wear, heel to the tip of your longest toe. Your longer foot.

Mondopoint, explained

Mondopoint (ISO 9407: size is foot length in millimetres) sizes a boot by the foot it fits, not by the boot. Ski boots print it in centimetres, in 5 mm steps, so every half centimetre is a size. Each brand’s chart sets the exact foot lengths a size covers; we round your length up to the next half centimetre, so 26.5 is for feet up to 265 mm.

One scale everywhere

Mondopoint is the same scale in every country: no US, UK or EU versions, and no separate men’s and women’s scales. Brands differ only in the exact foot lengths each size covers.

Your length is your size

Measure your foot in centimetres and you have your size. Round up to the next half centimetre.

Measure for ski boots

  1. Step 01

    Thin ski socks

Measure in the thin ski socks you’ll ski in. Thick socks don’t make a boot warmer; they make it fit worse.

  2. Step 02

    Heel to the wall, standing

Paper on a hard floor, heel against the wall, weight on the foot, knees straight.

  3. Step 03

    Mark the longest toe

Pen upright, touching the tip of your longest toe. Then measure to the mark in millimetres.

  4. Step 04

    Measure width too

Ski boots come in narrow, medium and wide lasts. Your width tells you which to try.

How a ski boot should fit

A new ski boot should feel tighter than any shoe you own. The liner packs out over the first days of skiing, so a boot that feels comfortable in the shop is often too big by the end of the week.

  1. Step 01

    Toes brush the front

Standing straight in the boot, buckled, your longest toe should just touch the front of the liner.

  2. Step 02

    Toes free when you flex

Bend your knees into a skiing stance: your heel settles back and your toes come off the front.

  3. Step 03

    The shell check

Take the liner out, step into the shell, toes to the front: the gap behind your heel should be about one finger for a snug fit, two for comfort.

  4. Step 04

    Heel stays down

Lean forward: your heel shouldn’t lift. Heel lift means the boot is too big or the wrong shape.

Shells, half sizes and lasts

Ski boot shells are moulded in whole sizes, and the half size above usually shares the same shell with a thicker liner or footbed. Salomon prints them that way on its chart, as pairs like 26–26.5.So if a 26.5 is too big, a 26 may not help: try 25.5.

  • Last width is the inside width of the shell at the forefoot, in millimetres, quoted for a mid size. Narrow, medium and wide lasts suit narrow, average and wide feet; compare it with your foot width. How to measure foot width.
  • Flex is how stiff the boot is to bend forward. It depends on your weight and skiing, not on your size.
  • Heat-mouldable liners are shaped to your foot in the shop and pack out less.

Kids’ ski boots

  • Measure the same way, standing, in ski socks. Children’s ski boots use Mondopoint too: Rossignol and Salomon kids’ charts are in the calculator.
  • Resist buying a size up to grow into: a loose boot lets the foot slide, which makes skiing harder and colder. Half a size of room at most.
  • Check the fit every season. Rental and second-hand boots make sense while feet grow.

Questions

What size ski boot am I if I wear a US 9 shoe?

For the standard US men’s 9, the foot is up to 26.25 cm, which is Mondo 26.5. But shoe sizes vary by brand: measure your foot for the real number.

Should ski boots be smaller than my shoe size?

Usually they come out the same or slightly smaller, because a ski boot fits your foot exactly while shoes leave room. Go by your measured length, not by your shoe size.

My foot is 26.3 cm. Is that Mondo 26 or 26.5?

Mondo 26.5: a 26 fits feet up to 26.0 cm. A boot fitter may still put you in a 26 shell if you like a tight fit, since 26 and 26.5 often share a shell.

Do ski boots stretch?

The liner packs out by a few millimetres in the first days. The plastic shell doesn’t stretch on its own, but a boot fitter can heat and punch it where it presses.

Are men’s and women’s ski boots sized differently?

No: both use Mondopoint. Women’s boots are usually narrower with a lower cuff and softer flex, so the shape differs, not the size.

Are touring and freeride boots sized the same way?

Yes, in Mondopoint. Touring boots are often roomier and lighter; try your measured size first.
