Estimate your size
Pick men’s or women’s sizes and type your height. You get the size of the middle foot of people your height in the survey, and the range half of them and nine in ten of them wear.
For your own size, measure your foot: with a photo or with a ruler.

Heights run from the bottom of each band up to (not including) the top. Where fewer than 30 people fell in a 2.5 cm band, it is merged with its neighbour. Sizes are the standard sizes for each foot, rounded up.
How much height tells you
In the survey, feet get longer with height: about 3.4 mm of foot for every 2.5 cm of height, for men. But at any one height, feet still vary: the typical spread (standard deviation) within one height band is 9 mm for men and 9 mm for women, so about two in three people of one height are within 2 US half sizes of the middle, and the rest further. Height accounts for about 51% of the variation in foot length between men, and 51% between women; the rest is just how feet are.
The data
ANSUR II, the US Army’s anthropometric survey, measured 4,082 men and 1,986 women aged 17 to 58 between October 2010 and April 2012. Foot length was measured on the right foot, standing with the weight on both feet, with a Brannock device read at the longest toe: the same measurement this site’s sizes use. The sample is soldiers aged 17 to 58, not the whole population, so a country’s figures may differ; the heights here stop where the survey had too few people to say.
Questions
What shoe size is a 6 foot man?
Typically a US men’s 11.5: men 182.5–185 cm tall (6 ft is 182.9 cm) have a middle foot of 28.2 cm. Half of them wear US 11–12.5, and nine in ten US 9.5–13.
What shoe size is a 5′4″ woman?
Typically a US women’s 9: women 162.5–165 cm tall (5 ft 4 in is 162.6 cm) have a middle foot of 24.7 cm. Half of them wear US 8.5–9.5.
Does height determine shoe size?
Partly. Taller people have longer feet on average, but height accounts for only about half the variation between people: at one height, one person in three is more than 2 half sizes from the middle.
Can I tell my shoe size from my height?
Only roughly. Measure your foot instead: it takes two minutes with a sheet of paper and a wall.
