Cycling shoe
size

Cycling shoes are sized in EU numbers and fit closer than everyday shoes. Measure your foot, find the EU size whose foot length covers it, and if you’re between two, take the larger.

The short answer

Size cycling shoes from your foot length in EU sizes: on Shimano’s chart an EU 42 fits a foot up to 26.5 cm (US men’s 8.5). Shimano says cycling shoes “are meant to be form-fitting and on the snug side. If between sizes, size up.”

Find your cycling shoe size

Shimano measures the way we do: “Stand on the paper with your heel against the wall and mark the longest toe on the paper. Measure the distance from the wall to the mark.” Type that length:

Standing, in the socks you’ll wear, heel to the tip of your longest toe. Your longer foot.

Step by step, with the mistakes that add a size: how to measure your foot.

Shimano’s size chart

Shimano sizes its shoes in EU numbers, with half sizes from 37.5 to 46.5. Its US column follows: where an EU size falls between two US sizes, the chart prints both (EU 38 is US 5-5.5, EU 38.5 is US 5.5-6). Against the standard EU sizes, Shimano’s are made for feet about 2 mm shorter on average: its EU 42 fits a foot up to 26.5 cm, the standard EU 42 up to 26.7 cm.

Shimano’s women’s chart runs EU 36 to 44; it’s in the calculator above.

How snug

Shimano: “Cycling shoes are meant to be form-fitting and on the snug side. If between sizes, size up.” Our sizes already round up: your size is the first whose foot length covers your foot, and the calculator says when you’re within a few millimetres of the size below.

How any shoe should fit, and what to do between sizes: how shoes should fit.

Wide feet

Shimano makes some models in wide versions. Answering a customer on its RC703 page, Shimano says its wide sizes “are not just standard shoes that have been stretched horizontally. Instead, wide sizes feature a larger circumference (about 9 to 10 mm compared to standard sizing) around the ball of the foot.” To find out if you need one: shoe width chart.

Questions

What size cycling shoe if I wear a US 9?

By foot length: a standard US men’s 9 fits a foot up to 26.25 cm, which is a Shimano EU 42. Shimano’s own chart prints a US 9 beside EU 43, for a foot up to 27.2 cm, so measure your foot for the real number.

Should cycling shoes be tight?

Snug, says Shimano: “form-fitting and on the snug side. If between sizes, size up.”

Is my EU 42 street size my cycling size?

Often close: Shimano’s EU sizes are about 2 mm shorter than the standard EU sizes on average. A standard EU 42 foot (up to 26.7 cm) is a Shimano EU 42.5.
